What a ride! (Short Tibetan update)

    Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

I’ve now arrived in Ali in Western Tibet after some gruelling and hard days. Physically because of the altitude, the ultra-thin air, the low temperatures, and well, because of the crash that I had about 5 days ago that badly hurt my left hand. Mentally because of the incredible isolation, the loneliness. It’s been very tough for me but I’ve recoved and will leave Ali tomorrow together with 3 great American cyclist…Tibet is a BIG place!

Expect a long silence from the WT HQ – Internet is a rarity in these regions…

    Next stop: The Tibetan Plateau…

    Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

I’m now ready for the greatest challenge of my life: to cross China and Tibet solo by bicycle. The route from Kashgar to Dali in the Yunnan Province is 5000 km in one of the most remote regions on earth and it crosses 12 passes above 4000m and 12 passes above 5000m on the stretch from Kashgar to Lhasa alone (3000 km). Am very, very excited about leaving Kashgar for the Tibetan Plateau tomorrow (04OCT06). I need a bit of luck to get through the Chinese and Tibetan permits and unforeseen obstacles (the planned route is officially illegal for foreigners) so knock-on-wood for me…
