Thought of the Day: (it ain’t much, I know…)
This whole experience gives me an immense belief and trust in humanity. A trust that comes from countless social encounters around the world rather than from the clever lines of a book.

To be free is to be capable of thinking one’s own thoughts – not the thoughts merely of the body, or of society, but thoughts generated by one’s deepest, most original, most essential and spiritual self, one’s individuality – Rudolf Steiner

Thursday, April 17th, 2008Day 738 – The Golden Poplars
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008(UK only – photos to come)
A lovely and – dare I say – welldeserved restday in Queenstown. Apart from a pre-noon walk through the autumn colours in the Botanic Garden, and a long wander in the supermarket while “offer scanning” all the alleys and shelves (‘cos nothing escapes me in the world of bargains, as you’d know by now), I don’t really do an awful lot today. The poplars are beautiful this time of the year. Golden and healthy to look at.
I hang out most of the evening at the hostel, eating, talking to random travellers who are doing exactly the same, eating, drinking tea, wathching some dumb movie, eating. That sort of stuff…And all this while mentally enjoying not being on the move today, enjoying less input than the normal nomadic bicycle life offers.
The bed’s soft. The sounds of my room mate’s loud snoring, well, different from the one-man silence that I’m used to in my own polyester world, that is my tent. Kind of cosy, those sounds of dreams…

Day 733 – Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You
Friday, April 11th, 2008Te Anau -> Milford Sound (wild camp)
Distance (km) : 123
Time on bike : 7h 40m
Brutto time: 08.35 – 19.00

Max.speed: 74.8 !
Total (km) : 29.085
Some people say you oughtta do one thing every day that scares you. Deciding to leave Lake Gunn and head up the mountains – a vertical climb of 600m followed by a 900m drop – and into Milford Sound at 4.30 pm, after 80 km and 5½ hours on the bike already, with the sun setting and the temperature dropping quickly, well, that was my scare of the day.
